WARSAW — The Park Board meeting, held Tuesday, Oct. 20, reported the completion of multiple projects, including a new disc golf course, an installed playground and the Kiwanis garden. The meeting also covered the resignation of recreation director Liz McKinley.

McKinley submitted her notice of resignation Monday, Oct. 19. Her and her family will be relocating to North Carolina due to her husband taking on a new job opportunity.

The new disc golf course in Lucerne Park is officially finished, and according to Superintendent Larry Plummer, the course has been well-received by the public and heavily used.

“We couldn’t have done this without the grant and support by the CVB. Its a great asset to our facilities,” Plummer noted. “There’s not a day gone by that I haven’t seen people there.”

In addition to the disc golf course, the park on Market Street, Richardson-Dubois Park, has just received a new playground and installation is finished.

Fall preparations were finished during the meeting. Pike Lake campground will be receiving a lot of attention this fall, with an overall general cleaning, with restrooms and gutters having been cleaned already. In addition, the Department of Natural Resources has already begun lowering Center Lake and Pike Lake for the winter.

In other business,

  • The 2015 sponsorships to date have reached $41,537.34, all going to parks in Warsaw.
  • The 2015-2016 grants to date total $9,687.34.
  • There are multiple safety concerns in Mantis skate park, including a sunken ramp, and cracks in the asphalt. The skate park also does not have a location or entrance sign for the public.
  • Pike and Center Lake beaches have been reported to have fish hooks near beaches and piers, causing a safety hazard for swimmers. A potential solution of banning fishing on the piers was discussed, but no conclusion was reached.
  • Overall, McKinley reported the summer was safe and successful, with no major injuries, and overwhelming attendance to every event.

The next Warsaw Parks Board meeting will be held at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17.
